Great King Henry, first Tudor king of England, behold the world that stands before you. Henry VII’s reign not only laid the foundation for a timeless dynasty, but set England on its course to become one of Europe’s as well as one of the World’s greatest powers. His son and heir, Henry VIII would go on to establish himself as one of the most well known names in English history, and his granddaughter Elizabeth also. Henry would reign until his death in 1509, leaving behind a lastly legacy. Most famously was his successful enforcement of the Intercursus Magnus, weakening Margaret of Burgundy's influence in the Low Countries and greatly enriching English trade in the region. The wool and cloth trade flourished under Henry, who made it his top priority to secure English trade interested across Europe. He imposed ruthlessly efficient tax systems on the country to build up his reserves. He would then go on to rule as an efficient and effective king, undermining the power of the nobility often in order to strengthen his own position. He secured his claim to the throne quickly by declaring himself king and following through with his agreement to marry Elizabeth of York. This brought an end to the War of the Roses and the devastation that came with it. Sailing from France and landing in Wales, he quickly marched into the heart of England to face Richard III at the what would come to be known as the Battle of Bosworth Field where, along with the help of Thomas Stanley’s switching of sides, he defeated and killed the king.

Henry pledged to marry Elizabeth of York, daughter to the late Edward IV, and support for the Tudor king began to grow, especially within France and Wales. Richard was not the most popular of kings, no thanks to the rumours of his murdering of the ‘Princes in the Tower’. In 1483 when the infamous Richard III came to the throne, his mother began promoting him as an alternative. By 1483, Henry was the strongest Lancastrian claimant to the throne. Born just following the beginning of the War of the Roses, he would go on to claim the throne of England for himself. Henry was born in 1457 to Margaret Beaufort and Edmund Tudor, his claim to the throne coming from his mother, a distant descendant of Edward III.
